Course Descriptions
Orientation (O) - 1.5 - 2 Hours or At Home
Orientation is recommended for all adult volunteers and is required for all leaders. Orientation is offered in 2 ways: an in-person session or as a take-home booklet. You will receive an overview of the Girl Scout program in the booklet, Getting Started in Girl Scouting. Topics include, but not limited to: the Promise & Law, Structure of the Girl Scout organization, Program Goals, Girl/Adult Partnership and Support Systems.
This course is available by attending an in-person session or as a take home version.
PREREQUISITE: VOLUNTEER APPLICATION PROCESS (VAP)
Basic Leadership Training – (BLT) - 3 Hours
This training covers the pertinent information you need to get your troop started. It will give you an understanding of being a Girl Scout Leader and how to run a troop in a safe and organized mode. Training also includes council policies and standards, volunteer guidelines, all forms, how to use the Safety-Wise book and a Safety-Wise quiz.
PREREQUISITE: VAP AND ORIENTATION (O)
Daisy Program Age Level (DPAL) - Kindergarten - 2.5 Hours
Brownie Program Age Level (BPAL) - grades 1 – 3
Junior Program Age Level (JPAL) - grades 4 - 6
You will get the basics to plan and run a troop meeting. You will learn about the characteristics of each age level and age appropriate activities. We will discuss finance, programs, community service, kapers, patrols and earned recognition as it pertains to each level. You will also gain insight to ceremonies, songs, council fund-raisers, girl/adult planning and parent participation.

Older Girl Educational Mentoring Series (OGEMS) - 11-17 year olds - 3 Hours
You will learn Silver and Gold award details, age level characteristics, girl/adult partnership, product sales and Studio 2B programs. You will also be given information on scholarships that are available.

Studio 2B Advisor Training – (S2BAT) - 3 Hours
Learn new ways for girls, ages 11-17, to experience Girl Scouts. Familiarize yourself with Studio 2B resources.

Progression to Brownie, Junior Leadership and Older Girl Advisor Training - 1.5 Hours
For all current leaders and assistant leaders who are moving to the next program age level. You will learn about the resources, programs and materials for the program age level of your progression. Studio 2B information will be included in the Junior and Older Girl trainings.
PREREQUISITE: BLT AND PAL TRAINING PRECEDING THE PROGRESSION
Basic Leadership/Program Age Level/Older Girl/Studio 2B Advisor- Refresher - 1.5 - 2 Hours
You will get new program material as it is developed by GSUSA, updates on council policies, standards, guidelines and forms. This refresher is required every three years as part of the responsibilities of your position.
PREREQUISITE: CURRENT CERTIFICATION OF LEADER/ADVISOR TRAINING
Girl/Adult Partnership – (GAP) - 2.5 Hours
You will gain knowledge for an effective girl/adult partnership. You will learn how to create an environment in which decision-making is balanced between getting things done and empowering girls.

CPR for the Schools and Community (CPRS/C) - 9 Hours
formerly know as Community First Aid and Safety (CFAS)
This American Red Cross course is for new certifications as well as re-certifications. The course includes first aid basics and CPR for adult, child and infant. It, also, includes practice and test with mannequins and written tests. Upon successful completion, which includes attending all dates in a session, you will receive a First Aid Basics card valid for 3 years; and an Adult, Child, Infant CPR card valid for 1 year. Wear comfortable clothing.
PREREQUISITE: NONE
Community CPR (CCPR) Re-Certification 3.5 Hours
This course is for people whose certification is current. The training includes CPR for adult, child and infant. There will be a review, practices and tests with mannequins and written tests. You must submit a copy of your current CPR card with the registration form and fee. Upon successful completion, you will receive an Adult, Child, Infant CPR card valid for 1 year. Please wear comfortable clothing.
PREREQUISITE: CURRENT COMMUNITY CPR CERTIFICATION
Community CPR (CCPR) Challenge - 1 Hour
You may take the challenge if there has been no change in the course from the previous year, your certification has expired, and you are prepared to take the physical and written tests without a review. To request the challenge, you must register for one of the re-certification courses. The time scheduled for the challenge only is one hour prior to the recertification course. Please note on your registration if you are taking the challenge.

Enrichment Workshops and Specialty Trainings - Time Varies
These workshops include but are not limited to: songs, games, ceremonies, arts-n-crafts, swaps, Girl Scout Traditions, Gold Award, Silver Award, bridging, Girl/Adult Partnership, Studio 2B, and others. In these workshops you will have the opportunity to learn new skills, enhance existing skills and/or share skills with other volunteers.

Trainings for Overnights and the Outdoors
Whether it's a hotel or a tent, The OVAL or the backyard, Girl Scouts are here to help you plan for a safe and exciting overnight experience. Girl planning and skill building are important parts of troop trip preparation. In order to plan and carry out an overnighter or campout successfully, training must be completed at LEAST SIX WEEKS prior to the trip. When planning an overnight or going on a camping trip, the certified first aider and the camp certified adult CANNOT be the same person. Please plan accordingly when scheduling your trips and your trainings.**Certification remains valid for THREE years.**
- Classes must be taken in order
- Step 1 will be available on line or by attending an in-person session. GSCGEHC will be offering 4 in-person trainings for step 1.
- Step 2 and 3 can be taken together or separately. Each course is at least 3 hours.
- No overnight is required.
- Step 2 and 3 will be offered at the Girl Scout Council of Greater Essex and Hudson Counties GSCGEHC; Girl Scouts of Washington Rock Council GSWRC; and Girl Scouts of Rolling Hills Council GSRHC. Trainees can take this training at any location.
- Volunteers who have taken TCT, do not need to take this new course.
Outdoors and Overnight Training (O/OT)-Step 1 On-line or 2.5 Hours
(formerly Move Out Training (MOT)
CERTIFICATION: TRAINING FOR OVERNIGHTS
This course is available on-line at www.girlscouts-rh.org/outdoor-onight/index.htm or by attending and in-person session.
- Is required for any overnights (1 or 2 nights)
- Provides information regarding policies and safety
- Prepares you for troop overnights at museums, hotels, conference centers, camp cabins, platform tents while attending camporees
- It does not cover fires or outdoor cooking
- Meal prep is limited to traditional kitchen and basic meals or re-heats (like home)
PREREQUISITE: VAP, Orientation and GSUSA Membership
Outdoors and Overnight Training (O/OT)-Step 2 - 3 Hours
(formerly Troop Camp Training (TCT)
CERTIFICATION: CAMP SKILLS
- This course covers basic camping skills including fire building and extinguishing, cooking marshmallows, shelters, knife safety
PREREQUISITE: O/OT-step 1 and/or MOT
Outdoors and Overnight Training (O/OT)-Step 3 - 3.5 Hours
(formerly Troop Camp Training (TCT)
CERTIFICATION: OUTDOOR COOKING
- Is required for troop to cook outdoors
PREREQUISITE: O/OT-steps 1 & 2 and/or MOT
Camping 101 (C101) 1 Prep and 1 Overnight
(For Designated Adults Assigned to Camping with their Troops/Groups)
CERTIFICATION: OVERNIGHT TROOP CAMP AND OUTDOOR COOKING SKILLS
Want to take TCT but afraid of how to teach your troop some of the needed skills? Why not take Troop Camp Training AND bring the girls, too? This course, based on the Troop Camp Training, above, is designed so Designated Adults Assigned to Camping and their troop(s) can learn outdoor skills together. Each adult seeking certification must submit an Individual Training Registration Form AND attend the Prep Class scheduled prior to the Camping 101 session selected. The girls attend the overnight only. Attendance at both the Prep Class AND Overnight is required to receive certification. Troops are responsible for their own food and Safety-Wise girl/adult ratios must be adhered to.

Camping Re-Certification - At Home Test
(For MOT/TCT)
This take home assignment must be completed and returned to the Outdoor Program Specialist within two weeks of receiving it. Those wishing to continue as the camp certified adult must seek re-certification BEFORE their certification lapses. Prior to receiving the take home test, current certification cards must be submitted. (i.e. MOT, TCT, Camping 101)
