Brownie Program Events

A Celebration of the Olympic Spirit
Select an Olympic recognized country to represent. Participate in the Parade of Nations, Opening Ceremony and the Torch Lighting of the Olympic Flame to begin the festivities. Compete in a variety of fun and challenging activities including relays, sack races and an obstacle course. Perform a song, dance, or informative presentation of your country at the Closing Ceremony.

Spring OVALfest
Join us for a doll picnic at the OVAL! We will have fun creating doll sized sit-upons, a tea party, and other activities just for girls and their favorite doll or stuffed animal! Please bring your favorite doll or stuffed animal and a ground cover to sit on!

Woodland Wanderings
Come to the OVAL and discover the beauty of the out-of-doors as we go on a short hike through the surrounding woodland area of our camp! We will have a short safety discussion and off we’ll go! Everyone should dress for the weather and wear sneakers or hiking boots. Pre-Requisite for Leaders and girls: Please read the Hiking checkpoint on pages 88 and 89 in the current Safety-Wise, before the event. Please call 973-746-8200, ext. 129, for additional dates, if needed.

People Are Talking Try-It
People communicate not only with words but in other ways, too. Your tone of voice, how you say something, how you stand, and where you place your eyes will help you get your message across.

Scrap Book Workshop - 3rd Grade and Up
Put together a dynamite scrap book of all of your special photos! Bring in your photos and we will provide each girl with an 8 x 8 scrapbook, colorful background paper, assorted stickers, “fancy” scissors, stamps and stamp pads to use. Girls will be able to get some advice on some basics of scrap booking and have some fun! Girls may also bring any embellishments they’d like to use.

Playing around the World Try-It
Children all over the world play games. We will try some games that we can all have fun with!

American Square Dancing
Learn the Basics of American Square Dancing, formed in “squares” of eight participants. The girls will learn to honor your partner, promenade, swing your partner, and so much more as they perfect the patterns of three to five American Square Dances.

Stitch It Together Try-It
Sewing is a skill that can be used in art as well as in fashion. Find out how contemporary artists use sewing and embroidery in their artwork by exploring our special exhibitions. In the studio, we will create works of art using sewing and stitching techniques!

Eat Right, Stay Healthy Try-It
What you eat affects your health. Using the Treasure Your Health Activity Booklet and the Try-Its for Brownie Girl Scouts book, we will learn more about good food and healthy food choices.

GirlSports Try-It
Brownies will be introduced to fundamental sports skills and fitness at the YMCA. The girls will learn proper stretching and have fun with activities that emphasize cardiovascular exercise. The girls will also be taught and practice sports skills such as throwing, catching, kicking, and volleying. Two hours of movement and fun! Girls are asked to wear gym clothes; however, sneakers are a MUST! Leaders, please read pages 28-31, in the Try-Its for Brownie Girl Scouts book, prior to attending this workshop.

Caring and Sharing Try-It
No one in the world is exactly like you – or your friends! Show how you care about yourself and others with the activities that we will try!

Dancercize Try-It Activities
We will be in constant motion, as we practice dance movements and make up our own dances! Girls will participate in various types of dances. We will end the session with a dance party…..all the common line dances and lost of fun! Girls are asked to dress for the activity. Leaders, please read pages 24-25, in the Try-Its for Brownie Girl Scouts book, prior to attending this workshop. Also, please bring a snack of granola bars and juice boxes for your troop for the dance party. Girls need to complete one more activity to complete this Try-It.

My Body Try-It
Brownie Girl Scouts will learn how their body, muscles, brain and heart work. In doing so, they will be engaged in various fun activities including running, hopping, skipping and jumping. We will experiment with reaction times, learn to take our pulse and make our brain work! Girls are asked to dress for the activity. Leaders, please read pages 44-47, in the Try-Its for Brownie Girl Scouts book, prior to attending this workshop. Girls may bring bottled water.

Puppets, Dolls and Plays - Tri-It Activities
Find out how artists create and use puppets and dolls in their artwork by taking a tour of our special exhibition. We will then learn a number of exciting techniques to make our own puppets and dolls in the studio!

Wave the Flag Try-It
The United States of America is a very special country. For hundreds of years, people from other countries have come to visit, live, or work here. Girls will try several activities to celebrate what makes America special.

Sweet Shoppe Try-It
How sweet it is! Have fun creating while learning! You will have a chance to sample all of your work and take some home, too!

Brownie Girl Scouts - Through the Years Try-It
Brownie Girl Scouting got started in the late 1920s. Many of the appliances we take for granted today had not yet been invented. Few people flew in airplanes, or used a phone to call long distance. Many of the other medicines people use today had not been discovered. We will discover things about the past by participating in these activities!

Creative Composing Try-It Activities
Compose means “to put together” or “to create.” On a tour of the museum, we will explore different methods artists use to compose their paintings. Using what we learn, we will then create our own painting in the studio!

Building Art Try-It Activities
Find out about the art of architecture and design. Take a tour of the museum to see how different artists portray the building and cities that they see. In the studio, Brownie Girl Scouts will create their own architectural design.

Eco-Explorer Try-It
Girls will explore nature on an identification hike around the YMCA camp in West Milford. There will be a habitat hunt, learn about the homes of local animals and build a model habitat. Girls will learn how plants and animals live together in their environment and make a contribution to them while visiting. This is a rain or shine event, so girls should dress for the weather. Girls are also asked to bring a shoe box, bag lunch and beverages in unbreakable containers. Leaders, please read pages 102-105, in the Try-Its for Brownie Girl Scouts book, prior to attending this workshop.
